On Sunday, October 19, 2025, at around 9:30 am local time, thieves pulled off a daring heist at the Louvre museum in Paris, using a crane to smash an upstairs window and steal priceless French crown jewels.
"La Ferita," or "The Wound," scales the Palazzo's Renaissance faade and simulates a giant gaping hole in the front of the building. Inside the architectural tear is an imagined vision of the Palazzo's interior, made real by a black and white photographic collage.
The museum opened on Monday after nearly four months of coronavirus closure, with a restricted number of visitors enjoying a rare chance to view the 'Mona Lisa' without the usual throngs.
Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the attack was "terrorist in nature".
Questions about staging a safe and secure Olympics in France were raised on Friday after the Paris 2024 bid suffered an untimely setback when a French soldier wounded a man armed with a machete as he tried to enter the Louvre museum.
