Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is welcomed by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and chairman of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Rajendra Pachauri and other officials during a visit to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi on Thursday. Queen Beatrix is in India on a four-day visit.
Embattled UN climate panel chief R K Pachauri found support on Friday from world leaders attending the climate change conference in New Delhi as they contended that some mistake in the IPCC report does not change the basic facts of global warming.
Climate change can adversely impact the production of crops like wheat, rice and pulses in India and the government needs to educate farmers in this regard, Nobel Laureate and Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change Chairman R K Pachauri said.
'Producing that set of reports was the work of hundreds of scientist, all of whom deserve honour -- and all of whom were honoured with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10,' said Nature. 'But a particular burden fell on the chair, and in that capacity Pachauri worked ceaselessly, and sometimes sleeplessly, to create compromise where necessary while refusing to dilute the key messages from the academic community he serves,' the magazine said.
Apart from the human body, human food will bear direct repercussions. From staples such as wheat, to coffee, dairy, and even the great Hilsa face the threat of reduced supply due to the extreme heat.
Scientists say global warming is advancing at an alarming rate, adding that such a trend would lead to drought and water shortages in dry temperate regions.
Global warming may sound like vague jargon from scientists making reports for the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change. Does it matters if the green house gas emissions by the world cross the limits of 550 part per million by 2050? Or if average per capita carbon emissions go beyond the 2.5 tonne mark?
Severe heatwaves, responsible for thousands of deaths across India over the last few decades, are increasing with alarming frequency and soon the country could become one of the first places in the world to experience heatwaves that break the human survivability limit, according to a new report.
Climate change can impact the amount and quality of livestock produce, says a report released by inter-governmental panel.
R K Pachauri, who is facing sexual harassment allegations, moved a city court seeking permission to travel abroad to attend a global water summit in Greece from April 26 to 29.
We're aware of the allegations, said the spokesperson of UN's Ban Ki-Moon.
Extreme rainfall that occurred in Tamil Nadu is "highly localised" and is part of the natural variability of the monsoon system and its attribution to global warming is "not established", the Rajya Sabha was told on Monday.
Pachauri has been allowed to go abroad from June 29 to July 9.
India's negotiating posture at the multilateral negotiations should be aligned with a significantly transformed development strategy domestically.' 'The positions the country takes at the negotiations will then carry credibility, says Shyam Saran, former foreign secretary and India's chief negotiator on Climate Change 2007-2010.
A report authored by UN's panel of scientists from across the world on climate change and sent to the governments of 197 countries has ominous news on the climate change front.
Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kumar Tripathi granted liberty to Pachauri to withdraw his plea and move a fresh application before the metropolitan magistrate having territorial jurisdiction of the case.
Pachauri had proceeded on leave from TERI after sexual harassment charges were levelled against him by a woman employee.
While India is pushed to keep a tight lid on its own carbon emissions, slow and low emission reduction by major polluters will cause an acceleration of climate change, says Rajni Bakshi.
While long term solution depends on each one of us altering our consumption patterns, the future depends on next generation technologists and entrepreneurs creating business models that naturally reduce the green house gas emissions.
Scientists at the India Meteorological Department warn that not only has India turned hotter in the last two decades, but that heat waves are projected to become more intense, have longer durations and greater frequency, thereby resulting in more deaths.
