An RTI reply has revealed that the Government spent a whopping Rs 14 crores towards treatment of patients during the Commonwealth Games. The amount was spent on treatment of 3,665 patients, who were admitted to the polyclinic and the athletes' medical room at the Games site.

RTI applicant Manish Sisodia, had filed an application requesting to know the expenditure incurred by the government towards treatment of patients during the Commonwealth Games 2010. According to the public information officer, Directorate of Health Services, Delhi government, Dr Pravin Kumar a total of Rs 14,99,79,200 was spent towards treatment of patients who visited the polyclinic and the athletes medical room. While 3,099 patients were treated at the polyclinic, 566 were treated at the athletes' medical room.

"If you calculate the medical expenditure per person it comes to Rs 40,000. There was no report of anyone being seriously injured during the event. What treatment did these patients undergo that it mounted to such a huge expense?" a disgruntled Sisodia said.

According to an official with the DHS, those treated in New Delhi included athletes and other local workforce involved with the extravagant event. The PIO also said that 223 doctors manned the polyclinic and 24 were present at the athlete medical room in different games sites.
