A photo symbolising "love and compassion" of an 85-year-old Brazilian woman getting her first embrace in five months from a nurse through a transparent "hug curtain" has been named the World Press Photo of the Year. This year, according to organisers, 74,470 images were submitted for judging, made by 4,315 photographers from 130 different countries. World Press Photo has been kind enough to allow to share some of this year's winning photos here with you.

Wheeling round, a look of utter shock on its face, a marmot jumps in fright after a young fox sneaks up behind it. The split-second encounter between prey and predator -- called the Moment -- has won the man who captured it the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year. There's only one thing better than photos of animals, and that's funny photos of animals. The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is back and they have announced its finalists. In addition to providing some light-hearted relief, the competition also aims to highlight the important message of wildlife conservation. From shopping responsibly by avoiding plastics and palm oil to restricting water use at home, this year's contest is aimed at making people think about the animals on the planet - as well as laughing at them. The winners will be announced on November 13.
