Confronted with a week-long impasse over the Nandigram issue, Lok Sabha on Tuesday cut short by a day the first part of the Budget session and decided to meet again on April 26.
The House saw two adjournments for almost five hours over the Nandigram issue and when it resumed at 1600 hours, there was turmoil over the Cauvery water dispute, forcing Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to abruptly adjourn proceedings for 30 minutes and again till April 26.
Uproar started as soon as Bharatiya Janata Party member Ananth Kumar initiated discussion on the February 5 final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal with agitated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members trooping into the well forcing adjournment for 30 minutes.
The scene was no different when the House again met at 1630 hours when Chatterjee remarked, "It is unfortunate that no discussion is possible on the issue."
He announced adjournment of the House till April 26. Before the debate began, Chatterjee appealed to members to discuss the contentious water-sharing issue in a dispassionate and responsible manner.
During the day, the speaker said political parties had sought rescheduling of the Budget session due to the announcement of seven-phased Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh to enable them participate in election activities.
The first part of the Budget session was originally scheduled to conclude on Wednesday. Rajya Sabha, which adjourned for the day, will meet on Wednesday.
