Union Law and Justice Minister Hans Raj Bhardwaj on Thursday underscore the need for speedy trial of terrorism cases and awarding of "strong and swift" punishment to the perpetrators of terror.
The suggestion came in a message Bhardwaj sent to the Indian Council of Jurists on the occasion of a seminar on Law and Terrorism, that the Council is organising on the Law Day on Saturday.
"Trial of cases relating to terrorism should be fast-tracked and the punishment to the perpetrators of such crimes should be strong and swift," Bhardwaj wrote.
ICJ convener Adish C Aggarwala said, "Strong and swift punishment must be the norm against all crime and violation of law."
A message from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office stressed that the scourge of terrorism "is the negation of all that law and civilised existence stands for."
The message said terrorism denied people freedom "guaranteed by the fundamental law of the land and protected by the judiciary.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil, in his message, voiced hope that the seminar will throw light on various aspects of terrorism and help formulate strategies to overcome it.
