April 03, 2003 17:03 IST

World Bank plans to extend about $2 billion to various projects in India this fiscal, with the first loan of $150 million going to a poverty reduction scheme in Andhra Pradesh.

"The bank will provide about $2 billion worth of loans this fiscal for various projects," Adarsh Kishore, additional secretary in finance ministry told PTI, after signing the first loan agreement with World Bank in New Delhi on Thursday.

World Bank decided to hike its loan exposure to India last year considering the need for multilateral funding in various infrastructure and social sector projects.

Kishore said the loans, which are in the pipeline are intended for sectors like power, road, poverty reduction and structural adjustments.

World Bank's first loan agreement of $150 million for 2003-04 is for Andhra Pradesh Rural Poverty Reduction project, which is expected to benefit over 2 million households.
