Sensex closes at 12,274, up 165 points

The markets had yet another strong session making some hefty gains on the back of buying seen in scrips across sectors. The Sensex closed at 12,274.27 up 165.13 points or 1.36%. The Nifty gained 50 points to close at 3553. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,036.17 up 37 points or 0.6%.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,041.87 up 33 points or 0.65%.

All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green.


The BSE Health Care Index was up 1% at 3,639.15. Wyeth, Ipca Labs, Cadila Health, Apollo Hospital and Nicholas Piramal closed higher.

The BSE IT Index lost 1.2% at 4,434.28. TCS, Satyam, Hexaware Tech, Wipro and I-Flex Solution advanced.

The BSE Metal Index was up 1.3% to close at 8,217.89. Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Nalco and Hindalco ended higher.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.3% to close at 5,751.09. Reliance Natural, ONGC, GAIL and IOC closed higher.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.06% at 8,191.90. Carborundum, KEC Infrastructure, Aban Offshore, Crompton Greave and BHEL closed higher.


The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,225.93 up 1.2%. Bajaj Auto, Asahi India, Apollo Tyres and Bharat Forge were among the gainers.

The BSE Bankex was up 1.6% at 5,734.87. Oriental Bank, Federal Bank, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra and Vijaya Bank moved upwards.

The BSE FMCG Index rose1.95% at 2,083.96. HLL, ITC, Dabur India, Colgate and Nirma closed in green.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7114.6 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26385.25 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3434.9 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 36934.75 crore.

Markets witness buying interest: HDFC, OBC, BHEL gain


The markets were witnessing buying interest as all sectoral indices were trading in green. At 2:10 pm, the Sensex was up 119 points at 12,228. The Nifty was up 34 points at 3,536.

The market breadth was positive, about 1410 shares have advanced, 983 shares declined, and 96 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers were BHEL (2.86%), HDFC (2.20%), TCS (1.90%), HLL (1.76%), Oriental Bank (5.56%) and Bajaj Auto (1.89%).


Reliance Comm (-1.06%), Larsen (-0.80%), Hero Honda (-0.33%), Tata Motors (-0.21%) and Jet Airways (-1.16%) were losers on the bourses.

The BSE Metal Index was up over 1.50%. The BSE Bankex, FMCG, oil and IT indices gained over 1%.
