Sensex zooms past 12,000 points

The Sensex rallied smartly in today's special three-hour trading session.

The markets were open on Saturday for trading in between 10:30 am to 1:30 pm in order to fully test the functionality of the backup site of the BSE.

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 30 points at 11,882. Continued buying thereafter saw the index zoom to a high of 12,061, before settling with a gain of 1.6% (191 points) at 12,043.

The Nifty gained 50 points to close at 3,558.

The BSE Metal index rallied 3.5% to 10,762. The Bankex advanced 2.2% to 5,246, and the Auto index gained nearly 2% at 5,549.
