Sensex zooms 84 points to 7,272

The Sensex opened with a small gain of four points at 7,192. It soon breached the 7,200-mark and moved in a range of 7,210 and 7,230 levels, before profit-taking trimmed gains.

After dipping to a low of 7,178 in early noon trades, the market was on a recovery path thereafter. A fresh bout of across-the-board buying towards the closing hours saw the index zoom to a high of 7,283 - up 105 pts from the day's low.

The Sensex finally snapped the three day losses with a surge of 84 points at 7,272. The Nifty, too, on strong buying support, ended above the 2,200-mark at 2,213 - up 27 points.

The market breadth ended firm. Of 2,578 scrips traded on the BSE, 1,720 advanced, 805 declined and 53 remained unchanged.

Reliance Industries, on volumes of over 28.57 lakh, soared 3.82% (Rs 24) to Rs 667. While Reliance Energy added 1.86% (Rs 12) to Rs 633, ONGC was up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 927.

Infosys jumped 2.89% (Rs 62) to Rs 2,195. While TCS moved up 1.93% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,248, Satyam was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 481. Wipro gained 1.13% (Rs 8) to Rs 704.

L&T shot up 1.56% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,257, and Tisco scaled up 1.88% (Rs 7) to Rs 357.

Dr. Reddy's added 1.32% (Rs 10) to Rs 748. While Cipla gained 1.69% (Rs 5) to Rs 331, Ranbaxy was up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 1,036.

HDFC Bank, however, tumbled 2.21% (Rs 14) to Rs 630, and ICICI Bank lost 1.22% (Rs 5) to Rs 440. SBI, however, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 6) to Rs 718.

VSNL jumped 7.64% (Rs 24) to Rs 341, while Videocon International added 5.31% (Rs 4) to Rs 79.

FMCG scrips notched up significant gains. ShawWallace soared 15.92% (Rs 26) to Rs 190. While McDowell advanced 6.21% (Rs 19) to Rs 322, Tata Coffee surged 5.52% (Rs 16) to rs 313.

Reliance led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 188 crore, followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 141 crore), VSNL (Rs 123 crore) and Titan (Rs 107 crore), respectively.
