Sensex gains 57 points at close

The markets shrugged off its weak trends in the mid-noon trades and remained firm thereafter. Frenzied buying in old and new economy stocks propelled the gains of the index to an intra-day high of 6,174 towards the closing hours.

The Sensex finally wrapped up the session with a per cent gain (up 57 pts) at 6,163. The Nifty, too, rallied sharply on all-round buying support, and added 23 points to close at 1,932.

Heavyweights, tech, banking and auto stocks end with smart gains.

ITC and HLL were up a per cent each at Rs 1,359 (up Rs 14) and Rs 149 (up Rs 2), respectively. Reliance, however, slipped a per cent (Rs 5) to Rs 501.

Satyam flared up 2.76% (Rs 10) to Rs 384. While Wipro gained 1.50% (Rs 10) to Rs 657, Infosys ended with a steady gain of Rs 8 at Rs 1,912.

SBI mopped up 1.97% gains (Rs 11) to Rs 582. While HDFC Bank surged nearly 6% (Rs 29) to Rs 519, ICICI Bank, after a mixed outing, was up 1.61% (Rs 5) at Rs 344.

Tata Motors moved up 3.36% (Rs 16) to Rs 479. While Maruti advanced 2.68% (Rs 11) to Rs 421, Hero Honda added 1.78% (Rs 9) to Rs 523. Bajaj, however, lost ground owing to selling pressure and dipped 1.72% (Rs 18) to Rs 1,005.

Bharti traded in the green for better part of the trading session, and advanced 2.52% (Rs 5) to Rs 203. While BHEL added 1.81% (Rs 12) to Rs 693, HDFC logged 1.38% gains (Rs 10) to Rs 755.  L&T, however, ended off-gains at Rs 906 - down Rs 14 or 1.52%.

HPCL moved up 3% (Rs 10) to Rs 337. While Tisco gained 2.11% (Rs 8) to Rs 368, ONGC was up Rs 4 at Rs 782.

Cement

and pharma majors also largely finished at higher levels.

Grasim jumped 1.78% (Rs 22) to Rs 1,280 and Gujarat Ambuja was up Rs 2 at Rs 416. ACC, however, was down a tad at Rs 344.

Ranbaxy and Dr. Reddy's were up a per cent each at Rs 984 (up Rs 5) and Rs 732 (up Rs 4), respectively. Cipla, however, ended a per cent lower (Rs 2) at Rs 273.
