China has clinched deals to sell more milling wheat and rice, helped by logistical logjams in India that have delayed delivery to ports of its subsidised grain for export, traders said on Wednesday.

Though Chinese milling wheat or rice are not priced quite as low as Indian grains some buyers have turned to China because an Indian government move to allocate more railway wagons to domestic food distribution hit export supplies there, they said.

China sold small quantities of long grain rice from its old stocks to African countries, they said. East European countries, such as Russia and Romania, were also considering purchasing Chinese round grain rice in small vessels or containers.

"I think they are probably in the position of offering some rice to

African markets," said a trader in Singapore.

"I think the business will start to pick up again...There's a little bit of renewed interest from East Europeans."

The traders said China was offering low-grade, long grain rice at prices around $135-$140 per tonne. The price for round grain rice was seen at around $200 per tonne.

These compared with Indian export prices for white rice of about $130 per tonne and par-boiled rice to $137.2 from January.

The traders said while China sold 350,000 to 400,000 tonnes of rice to Indonesia last year for shipment between September and March, there was talk that the Southeast Asian country was not happy with the quality of the rice it has received so far.
