The last date for filing returns of individual taxpayers has been extended by two months to September 30 from the earlier date of July 31.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes extended the last date for filing the return of income for assessees, whose accounts are not required to be audited and who are covered under Section 139 (1) of the Income Tax Act, an official release said.

Meanwhile, tax authorities have decided to look into the delay in the refund to salaried individuals and pensioners, who have filed income tax returns last fiscal.

The Income Tax Department of Delhi has made special efforts to provide better service to taxpayers and issue all refunds for income tax filed between April 2002 and March 2003.

"The department would welcome requests from taxpayers who have still not received their i-T refund on the returns filed during this period," an official release said.

Taxpayers may contact the income tax commissioner's office in this regard.
