Paul Jacob, CEO of US chip developer Qualcomm, along with other senior executives of the company, today met Tata Tele Chairman Ratan N Tata to sort out the royalty issues.

Jacob is slated to meet Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday and Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani on Thursday.

Sources at Bombay House, the Tata group headquarters in Mumbai,  confirmed today's meeting but did not divulge any details. "There was no set agenda for the meeting," they said.

Meanwhile, following the footsteps of Maran, his Korean counterpart has also raised the royalty issue with Qualcomm.

According to Korean Information and Communication Minister Rho Jun-hyong,
handset manufacturers Samsung and LG 'can stop paying royalties' to Qualcomm for the handsets sold in that country's market.

Jun-hyong told Seoul-based Korea Times the royalty deals between the handset majors and Qualcomm for CDMA phones shipped to the local market is ending in August. However, this was denied by Qualcomm officials.

According to industry sources in India, this is a significant move, as a decrease in royalty charges will help in bringing down handset prices.
