In line with the government's expectations, inflation, which rose for the previous two weeks, fell below 8 per cent for the week ended September 4 mainly due to fall in the prices of vegetables and some edible oils.

The point-to-point Wholesale Price Index inflation fell by 0.52 per cent to 7.81 per cent from the previous week's level of 8.33.

The general price level was as low as 4.59 per cent in the same period in 2003-04.

So far inflation has fallen only four times in this year and it had touched 8.84 mark on January 13, 2001.
