Public carrier Indian (formerly Indian Airlines) on Friday signed a deal with Airbus Industrie for the purchase of 43 aircraft as part of its fleet expansion plan, which was cleared by the government earlier.

"Our challenge is to modernise and grow while delivering a world class service," Indian chairperson and managing director Sushma Chawla said after signing the agreement.

According to the agreement, also known as term sheet, the airlines has placed an order for purchase for the 43 new aircraft, all belonging to the Airbus A320 family.

These include 19 A319s, four A320s and 20 A321s, an official spokesman said.

Airbus senior vice president (marketing) Kiran Rao said: "This commitment rejuvenates a partnership between Airbus and Indian Airlines that began over 30 years ago and which is now set to continue in future."

The first aircraft is scheduled to arrive in October 2006 and the entire delivery is expected to be completed by March 2010.
