Ludhiana's hosiery industry is all set for a global expansion with its products attracting French buyers who prefer Indian products than Chinese for sourcing directly to their country.

French Exporters Textile Federation, known as 'La Federation' visited the city's local woolen knitwear units as part of a CII-European Federation of Textile initiative and discussed modalities of business exchanges to source knitwear products directly from the city.

"I have come to know that Ludhiana is well known for manufacturing wide range of high fashioned products such as cardigans, pullovers, jerseys etc. So I decided to come here to see the knitwear products which could be sourced from here for the members of our federation," Anne Laure Linget, international manager, La Federation said.

French buyers now eye Indian and Chinese industry for meeting their textile and apparel requirements.

'La Federation', having a 200 to 600 member-strength across France, was hoping to source knitwear products from either India or China, Linget said. Considering the region's expertise in knitwear industry, chances are high that the federation would decide to source materials from India rather than China, she added.

Ludhiana knitwear cluster annually produces hosiery products worth Rs 5000 crore (Rs 50 billion) and its exports to several countries touch Rs 1000 crore (Rs 10 billion), including the goods worth Rs 350 crore (Rs 3.5 billion) it sends to Europe.
