German Airlines Lufthansa on Friday operated its first direct flight from Hyderabad to Frankfurt, making Hyderabad the network's fifth destination in India.

Lufthansa has selected Hyderabad as its fifth gateway in India due to its excellent growth potential, its role as a base for many MNCs focussing on IT and bio-technology, its CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber said.

"Hyderabad is a very important

addition to our network in India. We are now offering tourist and business people from southern India a very efficient new service," he said.

With the new service, Lufthansa would now operate 34 flights a week to India -- daily flights between Delhi-Frankfurt, Mumbai-Frankfurt, Chennai-Frankfurt and Bangalore-Frankfurt and three flights a week between Hyderabad-Frankfurt and Delhi-Munich.
