Bharti Airtel said on Wednesday it has become the first Indian telecom company to cross the 40 million subscribers
mark.

The company claimed it has also become the tenth telecom operator in the world to have more than 40 million subscribers in a single country, Bharti Airtel said in a statement in New Delhi on Wednesday.

This customer base was achieved in 12 years, which makes Bharti Airtel one of the fastest companies to cross the milestone, the statement said. The company doubled its customer base to over 40 million in the last 13 months only,
it added.

The company's overall wireless market share jumped to over 23.2 per cent as of April 2007 from 20.4 per cent as
R>reported in fiscal 2006-07.

"The 40
million customer milestone is indeed a remarkable achievement not only for us at Airtel, but also for the country as it clearly underscores the coming of age of Indian companies in the international telecom arena," Bharti Airtel Mobile Services President Sanjay Kapoor said.

Presently, the company covers 59 per cent of the country's total population and plans to aggressively roll-out more than 30,000 cell sites in fiscal 2007-08 to increase its coverage to 70 per cent.
