VHP general secretary Dr Jaideep Patel shot at in Naroda

Sheela Bhatt in Ahmedabad | December 03, 2002 19:12 IST

Unidentified miscreants on Tuesday evening shot and injured Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary Dr Jaideep Patel.

Chetan Shah, the VHP leader's lawyer, told rediff.com that Patel was shot at in the Naroda town at around 1730 IST. He said Patel was being operated upon at a local hospital. He, however, did not say anything on the condition of the VHP leader.

"Yesterday, state Intelligence Bureau had again informed Patel about the risk on his life. But still he was not provided any security," alleged Shah.

Claiming that Patel was aware of risk on his life, he said, "We have no doubts that anti-national elements are behind this attack."

Patel was mentioned in the First Information Report filed after the March riots. But later, charges against him were dropped by the local police.

In the FIR, few eyewitnesses had claimed that he had instigated a crowd on February 28 in Naroda town against the minority community.
