India rout Afghanistan by an inns and 300 runs

India thrash Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs -- their biggest victory in Tests in terms of runs.

This is also the 10th biggest victory overall in Test cricket.

A poor batting display by Afghanistan in the second innings as they lasted just 35.5 overs with their approach to attack the Indian spinners backfiring completely.

Sundar was the top wicket-taker in the second innings with figures of 4/36, while Kuldeep claimed 3/30.

India dominated right from the start as centuries from Shubman Gill (126) and K L Rahul (100) powered them to a huge 564/8 in their first innings.

Manav Suthar then excelled on debut with a six-wicket haul, taking 6/33 to send Afghanistan crashing for 152.

India enforced the follow-on and Afghanistan fared even worse in their second innings, to crash for 112.

Kuldeep back into the attack as he takes over from Suthar. Nangeyalia Kharote continues Afghanistan's attacking approach in the second innings.

He lofts Kuldeep Yadav powerfully straight down the ground for a six. He cuts the next ball straight into the fielder on the off-side on the bounce.

Sundar bowling a beautiful spell, getting some drift and sharp turn to beat the batters. Right-hander Ziaur is beaten two balls in a row on the outside edge as Sundar gets the ball to hold its line in between few sharp turning balls.

Kharote chancing his arm against Kuldeep. He has a big swing across the line but fails to connect before he plays the reverse sweep but straight to the spinner.

Kuldeep gets his man as Kharote gets a top edge trying to cut the short wide ball and is caught by Suthar at point.

Kharote is dismissed for six as Afghanistan slip to 112/8 in the 36th over.

Kuldeep strikes again next ball as Saleem Safi swings across the line but only manages a leading to be caught on the off-side for a duck.

That is the end of the match as Sharafuddin Ashraf is unavailable to bat.

The wickets keep tumbling for Afghanistan. Omarzai gifts his wicket away attempting to slog Sundar over the leg side. Kuldeep initially misjudges the ball but has enough time to recover his ground and complete an easy catch.

Omarzai walks back for four, dismissed for the second time in the day.

Sundar has good figures of 4/36 as Afghanistan collapse to 106/7 in 33 overs.

Siraj fails to gather as he charges in from mid-on after Zazai had driven Suthar straight towards him. Siraj has to run back to collect the ball as Zazai picks up two runs.

Suthar traps Zazai leg before wicket with the arm ball which skids straight on.

The umpire rules it out before Zazai takes the DRS. There is no bat involved and the impact is in line and ball going on to hit the stumps.

Spinner Suthar starts off with the ball in the post-tea session like he did in the first two sessions. Suthar giving it some generous flight as Afsar Zazai watchfully defends to play out a maiden over.

Sundar continues from the other end. Azmatullah Omarzai looks to loft Sundar down the ground and ends up getting it off the inside half, clearing the mid-on fielder for two runs to get off the mark and take Afghanistan past 100.

Good work from Jurel at short leg as he nearly reacts quickly to stop the shot from Omarzai and flicks the ball back but misses the direct hit with the batter out of his crease.

Sundar picks 3; Afghanistan 98/5 at tea

Suthar back into the attack in place of Kuldeep with tea around the corner. Atal reverses sweeps the third ball square on the leg side for a single and Zazai is beaten next ball by a sharp turning delivery before he keeps out the last two balls.

Sundar to bowl the final over of the session. Atal after working so hard for the whole of the session throws his wicket away with another poor shot.

A brain fade moment for the left-hander as he attempts a reckless lofted shot off the last ball of the session.

Atal only manages the leading the edge and is caught on the off-side after scoring 42.

Afghanistan go into the tea break on 98/5 in 29 overs, needing another 314 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

India will be looking to finish off the match in the final session on Day 3.

Sundar has relished the spin-friendly conditions to claim 3/30 in eight overs.

Sundar nearly gets another wicket. The full delivery had Atal lunging forward but he failed to get to the pitch and was beaten on the outside edge by the sharp turn. Wicketkeeper Pant also failed to gather the ball cleanly.

Atal tries the sweep shot and makes good connection but can't beat the fielder inside the circle. He keeps out the flighted deliveries from Sundar to end another testing over from the spinner.

Hasmatullah Shahidi takes a chance, sweeping Kuldeep for a boundary square on the leg side. He is then beaten on the outside edge as he chases a flighted delivery pitched wide of the stumps.

Shahidi offers no shot to the sharp turning ball from Kuldeep and is struck high on the pads. India take the review but the ball is clearly going over the stumps.

In the next over, Shahidi is caught in the slips off Sundar as Gill takes a superb low catch at slip.

Shahidi is dismissed for five as Afghanistan slip to 93/4 in the 27th over. Sundar getting into his rhythm, getting the ball to turn sharply from the right length, and has bagged two wickets so far. The ball was dipping sharply and Gill did well to stay low and get his fingers underneath it.

Kuldeep and Sundar working on the batter's patience, who have shown the desire to play the odd attacking shot in between.

Rahmat, who top-scored for Afghanistan in the first innings, perishes cheaply. He looks to hit over the top but holes out to Suthar at mid-off to be dismissed for 13.

Instead of batting for time and test their skills against India's world class batting attack, Afghanistan's batters are throwing their wickets away cheaply.

Afghanistan are reeling on 87/3 in 23 overs, needing another 325 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

Kuldeep comes back into the attack after the drinks break. He oversteps for a no-ball as Atal picks a single on the off-side.

Gurbaz hits Kuldeep inside out over the covers for two runs. He repeats the shot next ball, hitting the spinner's full delivery over the off-side for a boundary.

Gurbaz goes after Kuldeep as he lofts the spinner over long-on for a six to get 14 runs from the over.

In the next over, Atal gets a thick inside edge off Sundar which misses the stumps and goes fine on the leg side for three runs and Gurbaz takes one through midwicket.

Kuldeep gets revenge as Gurbaz throws his wicket away looking to loft the spinner down the ground. Despite a fielder being placed at long-on, he played the lofted straight shot to offer Prasidh a simple catch.

Gurbaz walks back disappointed after scoring 24 from as many balls.

Rahmat Shah gets off the mark with three runs courtesy of an inside edge which goes fine on the leg side.

Siraj strikes; Afghanistan lose 1st wicket

Off-spinner Washington Sundar comes into the attack. He starts with a no-ball as he oversteps before Gurbaz reverse sweeps the spinner for a four.

Gurbaz pushes the fifth ball into the off-side for one and Atal defends the last ball.

Siraj keeps Gurbaz on the toes, bowling on the stumps and looking to target the stumps. Gurbaz watchfully plays out a maiden over from the fast bowler.

Sundar bowls a wide half-volley as Gurbaz plays a nice drive through the covers for a four before taking one to long-on. Atal keeps strike with a quick run from the last ball.

Afghanistan reach 56/1 in 17 overs at the drinks break, still trailing India by 356 runs.

Atal played some shots early in his innings, but has batted with lot of caution after lunch to score 36 from 47 balls.

Siraj strikes; Afghanistan lose 1st wicket

Some sharp turn for Suthar as Atal going back to defend gets the inside edge which falls just short of Sudharsan, who dives forward at short leg.

The left-hander then plays a confident reverse sweep, hitting the spinner behind square on the off-side for a four.

Siraj is rewarded for his excellent bowling as he gets Malik leg before wicket for eight.

He plays back to the length ball from Siraj as the incoming delivery strikes him right in front.

Malik has taken the DRS but the impact is in line and the ball is going on to hit the stumps.

This is the first wicket for Siraj in this Test match.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz gets off the mark with a single on the leg side and Atal keeps out the last three balls.

Afghanistan openers battle for survival

India continue with pace from one end as Siraj replaces Prasidh. He starts with a cracking delivery, getting the ball to move away, as Atal is beaten on the outside edge.

He gets a thick outside edge next ball but it flies past the gully fielder for a four.

Another superb delivery from Siraj as the length ball again jags away sharply to beat Atal for the third time in the over. 

Atal then gets the edge off the fifth ball but it falls well short of Gill at first slip. He flicks the last ball off his pads but can't beat the fielder at midwicket.

Afghanistan have made a much better start, as they reach 29 for no loss in 10 overs.

Suthar nearly strikes the first blow for India. Malik pushing forward to defend gets the edge but Pant unable to take the sharp catch. The ball deflects off his gloves to the right of Rahul, who had wrong to his left initially.

Siraj on fire! He is getting to shape away from left-hander Atal, who has been beaten a few times already by Siraj.

Atal is beaten as he attempts to defend the length ball before he edges the next ball which falls short of the gully fielder.

Atal looking all at sea against Siraj, who again goes past the edge. He finds the edge next ball but it goes past the gully fielder for a four and he drives the lats ball through the covers for two runs.

It will be interesting to see if Atal attacks Suthar in this session like he did before the lunch interval.

Malik has focussed only on defending as he easily plays out a maiden over from Suthar.

A single each to Atal and Malik off Prasidh's third over as Afghanistan seemed to have ditched their approach of trying to play a few shots.

They are only looking to bat as long as possible and not give any easy wickets.

Malik has impressed with his confident footwork, especially while defending against spin.

Suthar slows down the flighted ball slightly as Malik pushing forward to defend is beaten by the turn and gets the edge which goes past slips for two runs.

Atal has decided to take the attack to Suthar. The left-hander uses his feet to get to the pitch and lofts Suthar over long-on for a six.

He clips the spinner in the gap at midwicket for two runs before he again comes down the track to loft Suthar over mid-off for a four.

Afghanistan have decided not to let Suthar keep bowling in one channel, on and around the off-stump.

Kuldeep Yadav comes into the attack to bowl the final over of the session. Malik not keen to take chances as he calmly plays out a maiden over from the spinner.

Afghanistan are 18 for no loss in four overs in their second innings, trailing India by 394 runs.

Atal showed some aggression, hitting 16 from 12 balls, as he went after Suthar.

Suthar enjoyed a memorable debut with a six-wicket haul in the morning session. His 6/33 are the second best figures by an Indian on debut after Narendra Hirwani's 8/61 against West Indies in Chennai in 1988.

He will play a major role in the second innings as well with the pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners.

Manav Suthar, who took six wickets in the first innings, will open the bowling for India in the second innings.

Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik are the openers for Afghanistan. The first ball strikes left-hander Atal on the pads as he comes forward to defend. India decide against the review as the impact looks to be outside the line.

Atal gets a thick inside edge next ball but Sai Sudharsan fails to hold on to a tough chance at short leg, he barely had time to react.

Atal decides to disrupt Suthar's rhythm as he slogs the spinner square on the leg side for a four to get off the mark.

Suthar's 6/33 in 22 overs are the second best figures by an India bowler on debut.

India, who have taken a huge 412-run first innings lead, have enforced the follow-on.

Manav Suthar bowls Rahmat round his legs to complete a memorable five-wicket haul in his debut Test.

Rahmat misses the sweep and is bowled after a fine knock of 60 from 135 balls, as Afghanistan slip to 143/8.

Suthar is the 10th Indian to pick a five-wicket haul on debut. He is the seventh Indian spinner to take five wickets or more in his first Test.

Suthar strikes again in the over as Saleem Safi is given out leg before wicket. Despite Afghanistan having two reviews left, he walks off without taking the review.

And to make matters worse, the ball had pitched outside the line of leg stump. Saleem is quite agitated as he makes his way back to the dressing room and has a few words with the support staff as he returns to the dug out.

Ziaur Rahman gets off the mark in style as he lofts the last ball over long-on for a six.

Spin from both ends as Washington Sundar replaces Siraj. Turn for Sundar as Rahmat pushing forward to defend is struck on the pads but the appeal for LBW is turned down as the impact is clearly outside.

Rahmat takes a single before Ashraf goes for the big sweep but misses. He takes a single on the off-side hobbling across the pitch.

Rahmat uses his feet to flick Sundar uppishly over midwicket for a four.

Suthar is back into the attack. He immediately gets the ball to turn away sharply as Ashraf misses a big slog. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is confident there was an edge as he goes up in appeal immediately.

India appeal for caught behind but the umpire is not interested before they take the DRS.

There is a clear spike on the UltraEdge as Ashraf is given caught behind for 11.

Suthar continues his dream debut, as he picks his fourth wicket of the innings.

Ashraf, who injured himself while fielding, winces in pain after pushing forward to defend against Kuldeep. This seems to be hamstring injury as the physio is called out.

Kuldeep bowls a no-ball as he oversteps before Ashraf watchfully keeps out the over.

With Ashraf struggling with his injury, the two batters are not taking the singles. The Afghanistan innings is going nowhere and unless Rahmat can hit a few boundaries they will just be stuck.

Kuldeep bowls a beauty to beat Rahmat on the inside edge with a big turning delivery as it narrowly misses the stumps. 

Ashraf struggles to run across for a couple of singles in the over.

Kuldeep has found his length as he gets another ball to go past the edge to beat Sharaf.

Afghanistan have scored 23 runs from 14.1 overs while losing a wicket in the first hour on Day 3.

Ashraf is struggling to even get up during the drinks break and needed help to get back to his feet.

India make their first change of the day as Mohammed Siraj replaces Prasidh. The pacer drifts on the pads as Sharif glances it fine for a four.

Siraj then has a confident shout for leg before wicket turned down. Ashraf, caught on the crease, is struck on the pads by the incoming delivery. 

India take the DRS but there is a clear inside edge as they end up losing the review.

Kuldeep Yadav into the attack for the first time on Day 3 as he replaces Suthar.

He makes a tidy start, with a maiden over to Rahmat, who has been quite solid against spin when defending.

The Afghanistan batters can take a cue from Rahmat's discipline and determination at the crease.

Siraj bowls another quiet over as Sharaf takes one first ball before Rahmat again keeps out the last five balls.

Rahmat gets to his fifty with a boundary as he pulls Prasidh to fine leg where Kuldeep makes a mess of an easy stop. He loses the ball in his attempt to throw and it ends up going into the ropes for a four.

Rahmat takes a single before Ashraf plays a cracking drive through the covers for a four to get off the mark in style.

Suthar continues to hold one end up, bowling another maiden over as Rahmat shows some solid defence.

10 out of 20 overs bowled by Suthar have been maiden overs, while he has conceded just 26 runs for his three wickets.

Suthar continues from the other end. Rahmat taps the first ball to mid-off as Jurel's overthrow gets the batter a single before Ashraf defends the rest of the over.

For Afghanistan the first hour will be about survival. Suthar, as he did on Day 2, continues to bowl in the channel around off-stump giving it generous flight but Omarzai is happy to play out another maiden over.

The first play and miss of the day as Prasidh gets some away movement to beat Rahmat on the outside edge.

The right-hander pulls a short ball to fine leg for a single getting nicely on top of the bounce and Omarzai blocks the last ball.

In the next over, Rahmat plays a superb shot using his feet to get to the pitch to drive Suthar along the ground to the left of mid-off for a four.

Debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar is blessed with amazing skills-sets and will be a treat to watch in the coming days, reckoned all-rounder Washington Sundar.

Suthar was the pick of Indian bowlers against Afghanistan, having snared three of the five opposition wickets on the second day of the match in Mullanpur on Sunday.

"He (Suthar) has been brilliant. We as players who have been playing with him in the last few years know what he can actually bring to the table, especially in this format," Washington, who scored an unbeaten half-century in India's first innings, said.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on Monday.

India will be aiming to grab a big first innings lead and extend their domination in the match.

Spinner Manav Suthar stole the show on his Test debut, picking up three wickets, to reduce Afghanistan to 113/5 at stumps on Day 2.

Left-arm spinner Suthar registered excellent figures of 3/21 in 15.5 overs. He started with a wicket in his first over in Test cricket, getting Abdul Malik for 16 at square leg before dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz (12) and Afsar Zazai (3). 

Prasidh Krishna was the other wicket-taker for India, picking up 2/27 in seven overs.

Rahmat Shah was the only Afghanistan to offer some resistance as he finished unbeaten on 43 from 81 balls.

Earlier, India declared their first innings on a huge total on 564/8 on the second day. They added 196 runs from 42 overs before declaring their innings around half an hour before tea break. Pacer Mohammed Saleem (6/140) bagged a fine five-for, despite India's batting domination.
