Match called off; RCB go top, KKR out

Royal Challengers Bengaluru inched closer to the IPL 2025 play-offs after their match against Kolkata Knight Riders was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of heavy rain in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Both teams bagged one point each following the washout.

RCB inched closer to the play-offs as they moved to top of the points table with 17 points from 12 games, while defending champions KKR were knocked out of the tournament.

Nothing to update except that it is still raining at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The players and officials are waiting on the sidelines with the rain showing no signs of holding up.

The toss needs to take place by 10.40pm IST. If the rain doesn't stop then it wouldn't be long before the game is called off.

Still no signs of rain relenting in Bengaluru as the fans continue to wait patiently to atleast get a 5-over match.

The cut-off time for a 5-over match is 10.56pm IST, so we will still have a lot of time on hand.

It continues to rain steadily with the square under covers and a lot of water in the uncovered parts, but that should not be an issue once the rain stops.

The joy was short-lived as the rain is back in full force at the M Chinnswamy Stadium.

The rain is once again quite heavy and as was announced earlier, we will start losing overs from 8.45pm IST onwards.

Remember, it will take around 15-20 minutes for the outfield to be ready once the rain stops, so we will need the rain to stop by 10.30pm for any chance of the match to get underway.

Rain stops in Bengaluru

Finally, the rain has stopped at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as the fourth umpires strides out for an inspection of the conditions.

There is a lot of water on the covers which needs to be cleared before any decision can be made on the restart, provided there is no further rain.

The groundstaff have quickly swung into action with the super soppers working on drying the outfield.

The outfield which is equipped with the SubAir System won't take much time to dry up and play could restart within the next 30 minutes if there is no rain.

RCB vs KKR match delayed due to rain

It continues to pour at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as the weather shows no signs of improvement.

'The outfield resembles a lake,' exclaims Harsha Bhogle on commentary.

High-flying RCB have a couple of key changes in their squad. Josh Hazlewood won't be available for the next three matches after he returned to Australia following the suspension of the IPL last week.

The Australian pace spearhead has been a standout performer for RCB this season, claiming 18 wickets in 10 innings at an economy rate of 8.27.

RCB suffered another blow as Devdutt Padikkal, who played 10 matches and scored 247 runs with the help of two half-centuries, sustained an injury to his right hamstring and was ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025.

RCB signed up local lad Mayank Agarwal as a replacement for the injured Padikkal.

Things are not looking good at the moment as there is a lot of water on the covers and puddles have formed on the outfield.

However, not to forget the stadium's SubAir drainage system which ensures the outfield is ready in around 15-20 minutes once the rain stops.

Accuweather has forecasted heavy rain for the next couple of hours in Bengaluru but things should improve 10pm onwards.

RCB, who are second on the table with 16 points from 11 matches, will seal their place in the play-offs if they beat KKR.

While they could still qualify even if they lose their last three games, they will aim to win all three to finish in the top two and secure a place in Qualifier 1.

On the other hand, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders could be knocked out if they lose today. They are placed sixth with 11 points from 12 games, including a washout.

IPL 2025 resumes as RCB take on KKR

image

Welcome to the coverage of the IPL 2025 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Brought to a halt by the recent India-Pakistan border tensions, the IPL gets underway as RCB clash against KKR in a high-stakes contest where the spotlight will firmly be on Virat Kohli following his recent Test retirement.

The unexpected 10-day break has left both the RCB and the KKR with different goals to achieve and common challenges to hurdle over.

RCB are second on the table with 16 points from 11 matches, and a win here can propel them to the play-offs. KKR are sixth on the table with 11 points from 12 games, and a slip-up will evaporate the defending champions' hopes of making the knockouts.

RCB are coming off a four-match winning streak while the tourists have managed to stitch two victories in three matches before the league came to a grinding halt. Questions remain on whether they can regain that competitive edge after a passage of uncertainty.

RCB are better-placed to surmount these difficulties, and the sight of skipper Rajat Patidar batting rather fluently at nets might have soothed a lot of nerves.

However, the loudest cheers will be reserved for Kohli, who announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this week.

If social media calls are anything to go by, the faithfuls are planning to don the white jersey to honour a batter who lorded over the traditional format.

However, Kohli does not require such external motivation to stoke his inner fire and, rest assured, the 36-year-old will be eager to churn out some impactful knocks, perhaps a silent riposte after a rather abruptly ending his Test career.

KKR, riddled with their own issues, might just be the opponents that Kohli needs to vent a few strands of frustration, if indeed there is any.

Batting has been KKR's Achilles Heel this season as apart from captain Ajinkya Rahane and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, none of their batters have managed to contribute consistently.

They would like a few more runs from the bats of Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell and Rinku Singh.

However, the KKR bowling line-up of Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana has held its own despite being on the expensive side on occasions.

The M Chinnaswamy pitch so far has shown an affinity towards the bowlers with pacers and, at times, spinners getting rather unanticipated help in the form of bounce and bite.
