The second ball is back of length and angled across as Rohit defends.

Nothing can beat Kohli's experience: Rohit

image

All eyes may be on India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli, who had a rare failure in the opening game against Ireland on Wednesday.

Captain Rohit Sharma believes Kohli's experience could be crucial in the big game against Pakistan.

"Virat didn't play the Bangladesh (warm-up) game but he's had enough training under his belt before this game...the kind of experience that he has, playing all over the world, playing in big tournaments, nothing can beat that," Rohit said on Saturday.

Kohli has a strong record against Pakistan in T20 World Cup, with four half-centuries against them. In India's only loss to Pakistan in an ICC World Cup, Kohli had scored 57 in Dubai, 2021,

In his first T20 World Cup, he made 78 not out in Colombo back in 2012. Two years later, in Mirpur, he made his lowest score against Pakistan in a World Cup -- 36 not out.

In Kolkata, in 2016, he struck an unbeaten 55 and in the last tournament in 2022, he scored a match-winning 82 not out at MCG to guide India to a memorable win.

Pitch a worry for India?

image

India captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday said he has no idea what to expect from it in the T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan as even the curator is "confused" about the drop-in wickets being used in New York.

The four matches in New York so far have seen low scores, including in India's first match against Ireland when the latter was bowled out for a sub-100 total. The ICC had to issue a statement acknowledging the inconsistent nature of the tracks.

"New York is not our home ground. We have played two matches here but we don't have much awareness about its nature. It behaves differently on different days, so even the curator is confused," Rohit said on the eve of the game against Pakistan

The slowness of the outfield, Rohit said, has compounded the worries.

"The outfield is slow. Some shots get lot of bounce on the field, and some others do not roll on the field. So running between the wickets is important. We need to play as per conditions," he explained.

Rohit hinted that Rishabh Pant will continue to bat at No. 3 as he did against Ireland.

"I had to look at Rishabh in the few games in IPL to make up my mind on where he will bat in the World Cup," he said.

Focus on pitch as India take on Pakistan

image

Welcome to the coverage of the T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, in New York, on Sunday.

A confident and well-adjusted India would look to capitalise on an unpredictable Pakistan's vulnerable state and lack of familiarity with the tricky conditions in New York.

The marquee game will be held at the newly constructed 34,000-seater Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where the pitch has been a big talking point.

The pitch already faced significant criticism for its unpredictability with batters struggling in the first four games held at this venue.

The four drop-in pitches at the venue, laid in April under the supervision of Adelaide Oval groundsman Damian Hough, are yet to settle down properly.

The uneven bounce of the surface has also raised safety concerns for the batters, especially after Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was hit on his shoulder, forcing him to stop batting during his team's first match against Ireland on June 5.

The Pakistan team, however, is yet to acclimatise to the conditions at Nassau Stadium.

They arrived in New York on Thursday night following their shocking defeat to tournament debutants USA and took the next day off.

As a result, Babar Azam and his squad have had limited time to adjust to these challenging conditions, which could be a disadvantage heading into this crucial encounter.

A defeat against India could significantly complicate their qualification prospects. Against Ireland, the Indian think-tank left out left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the playing XI and opted for an extra specialist fast bowler.

However, given Kuldeep's recent form and his favourable match-ups against Pakistani batters, especially Babar, the team management might consider including him.

If so, one out of Axar Patel or Ravindra Jadeja may have to sit out. The batting is more or less settled with Rohit and Virat Kohli expected to continue as openers and Rishabh Pant taking the No.3 slot.

Pakistan, on the other hand, would be hoping to get their act together after the opening shock loss against USA.

With conditions helpful for seamers as pointed out by India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after the Ireland game, it won't be a surprise if the lethal version of Pakistan's bowling attack led by Shaheen Afridi decides to show up on Sunday and put the team's campaign back on track.
