India 27-1 (6 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Willey continues as Rohit clips the second ball square on the leg side for a single.

Willey nearly strikes as new batter Virat Kohli pushes away from his body but is beaten by the length ball slanted across and that was not far from the outside edge.

Kohli solidly keeps out the last two balls to end a tidy over from Willey.

Woakes bowls in a good channel outside the off-stump as Rohit leaves the first two balls before he is beaten trying to clip and is struck high on the pads.

Rohit tries to drive the fourth ball but the edge falls well short of the fielder at slip before he keeps out the last two balls as Woakes bowls a maiden over.

After that 18-run over England have bounced back taking one wicket for five runs in the next three overs.

India 26-1 (4 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Gill clips Woakes uppishly through midwicket for a couple of runs before he is beaten by the incoming delivery as he uses his feet.

Wicketkeeper Buttler interested in the appeal but not much from the bowler as they decide against the review.

Gill glances the fifth ball to fine leg for a couple of runs with the fielder placed quite square.

Woakes gives England the early breakthrough as he bowls Gill through the gate with the incoming delivery for nine.

India 22-0 (3 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are the two openers for India, while left-arm pacer David Willey opens the bowling for England.

The first ball is slanted across Rohit, who lets it go before defending the next on the leg side.

Rohit is beaten third ball as he pokes away from the body before he taps the next to point and thinks about the single but decides against it.

Full and on the stumps from Willey as Rohit defends it with a straight bat.

The last ball shapes away quite a bit as Rohit looking to defend is beaten as Willey makes a good start with a maiden over.

Chris Woakes from the other end. The first ball is ignored by Gill before he is struck high on the pads by the incoming delivery.

Gill gets off the mark as he punches Woakes in the gap between cover and point for a splendid boundary.

The right-hander goes for another drive next ball but ends up inside edging it on to his pads.

He plays another cracking drive off the last ball but straight to the fielder at extra cover on the bounce.

Willey starts his second over with a yorker which Rohit keeps out. He then uses his feet and smashes Willey over the fielder at mid-on for a four to get off the mark after seven dots in a row.

The next ball is short and Rohit picks up the length early to pull it handsomely over midwicket for a huge six and clips the fourth ball to fine leg for one.

Gill opens the face of the bat to push Willey past point for one.

Rohit uses his feet to launch the last ball straight down the ground for the second six of the over.

18 runs from the over as India race to 22 for no loss in three overs.

Rohit already making his intent clear with two sixes in the third over after he played out a maiden over.

Eng opt to bowl; India unchanged

England captain Jos Buttler has won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the World Cup match in Lucknow on Sunday.

India have opted to play with the same team which beat New Zealand, which means that there is no place for Ravichandran Ashwin.

India have included three fast bowlers and two spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

England also retained the same team despite their thumping loss to Sri Lanka in their last match.

Defeat will knock out England

Welcome to the coverage of the World Cup 2023 match between India and England in Lucknow on Sunday.

India and England have played with contrasting approaches in the World Cup so far, producing contrasting results. India are on course to top the league stage while England are looking to survive in the tournament they won four years ago.

The Rohit Sharma-led side has hardly put a foot wrong, having chased successfully for five games in a row.

England set the benchmark in white-ball cricket with their aggressive style of play, resulting in global triumphs in both the shorter formats.

However, the boom or bust approach has clearly not worked in Indian conditions and the defending champions find themselves on the brink of an embarrassing exit.

Compared to England, India have very little to worry about though they will be missing the all-round services of Hardik Pandya for at least the next couple of games.

In the usual scenario, Ravichandran Ashwin would have replaced Shardul Thakur on a pitch that is likely to assist the spinners. However, Hardik's absence forces the team management to play only five bowlers.

Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja walk into the combination for Sunday's game.

To accommodate Ashwin as the third spinner, India will have to choose between Mohammad Siraj and Mohammed Shami, who asserted his world-class credentials with five wickets in Dharamsala.

In Hardik's absence, Suryakumar Yadav is the team's choice at number six. Following an unfortunate run-out in his first game of the competition, he will be itching to make an impact.

The chatter on Shreyas Iyer's perpetual struggles against the short-ball has resumed following his dismissal in Dharamsala. He will be fired up to prove his doubters wrong.

Shubman Gill, who missed the first couple of games due to dengue, is due for a special knock. The Lucknow crowd could also witness a record-equalling 49th hundred from Virat Kohli.

Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is from Uttar Pradesh, will be looking to fox the England batters at the state-of-the-art stadium. It was a good test for him against the rampaging Daryl Mitchell and he will be ready for the England challenge.
