Taylor's century guides NZ to victory

NZ 348-6 (48.1 ovs) vs India 347-4 | Scorecard

Ross Taylor and stand-in captain Tom Latham combined in a 138-run stand to guide New Zealand to a morale-boosting four-wicket victory over India in the first one-day international in Hamilton on Wednesday.

Taylor chaled up his 21st century with an unbeaten 109 while Latham, deputising for the injured Kane Williamson, weighed in with 69 as the hosts chased down India's imposing 347-4, passing the target with almost two overs to spare.

Victory was not without a scare, however. New Zealand lost three quick wickets as they approached the target, raising fears of a repeat of their capitulation in the Twenty20 series, when they threw away winning positions in the last three games to slump to a 5-0 defeat.

But Mitchell Santner held his nerve, finishing on 12 not out as New Zealand ended an eight-game losing streak, having also succumbed 3-0 in their test series in Australia.

India's massive total was built on Shreyas Iyer's maiden one-day international century.

Dropped on eight, 11 and 83, he went on to score 103 and shared in century stands with both Virat Kohli (51) and KL Rahul (88 not out).

New faces on trial as depleted India-NZ clash

image

Welcome to the coverage of the first One-Day International between New Zealand and India in Hamilton, on Wednesday.

Injuries to key players have opened the door for exciting youngsters like Prithvi Shaw to make an impression in the Indian line-up against a low-on-confidence and depleted New Zealand in the three-match ODI series.

This is India's third ODI assignment after last years World Cup, after victories over the West Indies (away) and Australia (at home).

The Black Caps will be playing their first ODI since that infamous loss at Lord's in the World Cup final against England.

The last time these two sides met in the 50-over format, New Zealand knocked India out of the World Cup with an 18-run win over two days, in the second semi-final at Manchester.

India extracted revenge with a 5-0 T20 whitewash that concluded on Sunday.

In the current context, stakes aren't that high as both sides prepare for the T20 World Cup later in Australia this year. In fact, the upcoming two-Test series later this month bears more significance than this ODI clash.

In the ODI series, neither side will be at full strength, as a string of first-team players will be missing due to injuries.

India were dealt a major blow when Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing tour owing to a calf injury he sustained in the fifth and final T20I. The Men in Blue are already missing Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar.

New Zealands inspirational skipper Kane Williamson joined the long list of injured along with compatriot Trent Boult.

Mayank Agarwal was named Rohit's replacement for the ODI series on Tuesday afternoon, and skipper Virat Kohli outlined that they will stick to the strategy adopted against Australia in Rajkot, where KL Rahul kept wickets and batted at number five.

Kohli had more or less confirmed Shaw's ODI debut in that scenario, and now India will probably have two openers debuting.

The last time such a situation arose was 2016, when KL Rahul and Karun Nair opened for India on their debuts in Zimbabwe.

In the nets on Tuesday, Manish Pandey batted along with Kohli and Iyer, ahead of Shivam Dube, Rishabh Pant and Kedar Jadhav.

If Pandey plays, the lower order will be a curious mix with Dube, Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja vying for the all-rounder's slot.

In the bowling department, three pacers will probably be the norm once again.

Kuldeep Yadav, who sat out the entire T20I series, is slated for a comeback given his performance against Australia at home.
