The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 35-odd points at 14,166. Agressive buying in ONGC, Reliance, HDFC and Bharti Airtel saw the index zoom to an all-time, intra-day high of 14,326 - up 195 points from the prevous close.
A heavy bout of selling in late noon trades saw the index wipe out almost the entire gains and slip to a low of 14,140.
The index, however, bounced back immediately, and finished with a gain of 86 points at 14,218.
The Oil & Gas index surged 1.6% to 6664. The FMCG and PSU indices moved up over 1% each at 1935 and 6294, respectively. The Consumer Durables index, however, dropped nearly 2% to 3828.
The market breadth was marginally positive - out of 2,714 stocks traded, 1,358 moved up, 1,303 declined and the rest were unchanged today.
Index Movers & Shakers
HDFC soared nearly 3.5% to Rs 1,600. ONGC surged 2.5% to Rs 917.
Larsen & Toubro rallied over 2% to Rs 1,586. ITC, HLL and BHEL gained around 1.5% each at Rs 172, Rs 224 and Rs 2,304, respectively.
Satyam and Reliance moved up over 1% each to Rs 515 and Rs 1,367, respectively. Maruti and Wipro were also up over 1% each at Rs 918 and Rs 641, respectively.
Tata Steel shed 1.7% to Rs 476. ICICI Bank dropped 1.5% to Rs 972.
Reliance Communications, Reliance Energy and Tata Motors slipped over 1% each to Rs 436, Rs 528 and Rs 953, respectively.
Value & Volume Toppers
Tech Mahindra topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 387.40 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 115.90 crore), IFCI (Rs 113.45 crore), Indiabulls (Rs 101.55 crore) and Biocon (Rs 91.40 crore).
IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 4.14 crore shares followed by Harig Cranks (1.52 crore), Silverline (1.43 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.07 crore) and Development Corporation Bank (90 lakh).
