The government on Friday called on the multinational companies coming to India to focus on research and development and set up manufacturing bases instead of concentrating on the market size only.
"India should not be looked at only as a consumer base, but the multinationals coming to India should stress more on technology transfer and creating manufacturing base with R&D facility in the country," Union Minister of State for Communication and IT Sumitra Mahajan said while interacting with WorldTel, chairman Sam Pitroda in New Delhi.
While discussing various issues in the telecom sector, Pitroda apprised the minister about his plans to develop electronic money where mobile sim cards would be used as credit cards.
He also highlighted the need for infrastructure development in rural areas to reduce migration from rural to urban areas.
Pitroda was of the view that public sector undertakings would have to put in more efforts and investments in the R&D wing to compete with multinationals entering India.
