Jewellery exports rise to $14 bn

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India has announced the performance figures of the sector for January-December 2004.

During the period, total exports of the Indian gems and jewellery sector stood at $14.32 billion and showed an impressive growth of 37.88 per cent, compared to the corresponding period last year.

The export of cut and polished diamonds during Jan-Dec 2004 was $10.34 million indicating a growth of 28.42 per cent.

Jewellery showed maximum growth of 78 per cent, which indicates the rising share of the sector in the country's overall gem and jewellery exports.

The chairman of GJEPC Bakul Mehta says, "The industry has shown an impressive growth. We are confident that we would surpass the target of $16 billion by 2007.''
