Forex reserves up by $291 mn

India's foreign exchange reserves grew by $291 million during the week ending January 28, 2005 to touch $1,29,720 million.

Foreign currency assets during the week also rose by $286 million to $1,23,719 million, the RBI said in its weekly statistical supplement in Mumbai on Saturday.

Gold reserves and Special Drawing Rights remained static at $ 4,582 million and $5 million respectively, RBI said.

India's Reserve Tranche Position with International Monetary Fund increased by $ 5 million to reach $1,414 million, it said.

Loans and advances to state governments were up by Rs 222 crore (Rs 2.22 billion)to Rs 3,435 crore (Rs 34.35 billion) while that to central government showed a nil balance.

During the fortnight ending January 21, aggregate deposits with the banks grew by Rs 5,835 crore (0.4 per cent) to Rs 16,61,573 crore (Rs 16615.73 billion), the RBI said.

Food credit during this fortnight, however, fell by Rs 3,630 crore (Rs 36.3 billion) to Rs 41,429 crore (Rs 414.29 billion) while non-food credit rose by Rs 7,336 crore (Rs 73.36 billion) to Rs 9,99,512 crore (Rs 9995.12 billion), the central bank added.
