The Lok Sabha approved the Union Budget for 2003-04 with some minor changes on Wednesday.

The Budget was approved by a voice vote.

Finance Minister Jaswant Singh unveiled the populist Budget on February 28 with a slew of measures to make life easier for the poor and the middle classes in the run-up to state and national elections.

But he also promised to maintain fiscal discipline and unwound many of the high customs duties that protect the Indian economy in a budget meant to help India compete globally.

Last month, Singh revoked increases in fertiliser prices announced in the budget, a move economists described as bowing to pressure from vested interests.
