Naguib Kheraj, the Indian origin group finance director of Barclays Bank, has been declared winner of Telegraph Business Awards 2004.

"Being finance director is not about one person. It's about being part of a whole team that's involved in taking the company forward," Kheraj said after winning the award.

"You have to be an integrated part of the management team and understand the roles of the chief executive and the heads of the various business lines," he said. Kheraj joined Barclays Bank's Barclays Capital arm in 1997 as chief administrative officer.

Born in UK to Gujarati parents, Kheraj spent his childhood in Tanzania, Switzerland, Pakistan and the Middle East.

He has served as global head of investment banking and deputy chairman of Barclays Global Investors. Previously, at Robert Fleming, he was co-head of global capital markets and a member of the executive committee.

Kheraj also oversees the UK banking business,  Barclay's largest division with 14 million UK personal customers, 740,000 business customers and more than 2,000 UK branches.

Barclays Capital is number five in global debt rankings, while the private client business has some 75 billion pounds under management for a widely dispersed client base of some 375,000.
