Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Robert Quiroga was killed early on Monday in San Antonio, Texas, police said.

Quiroga was found lying next to his car at about 0400 local time (1430 IST) on Monday at an intersection in the northwest part of his hometown San Antonio.

He had been stabbed repeatedly and was pronounced dead at a San Antonio hospital.

Earlier

in the night, Quiroga had been drinking with friends at a bar about three blocks from where he was found. There are no suspects and no apparent motive for the attack, police said.

The 35 year-old won the IBF super flyweight title by beating Juan Polo Perez in 1990 and held it until 1993 when he lost to Julio Cesar Borboa, the first defeat of his career. He retired two years later.
