Tata Motors goes about giving shape to its Rs 1 lakh car project, Kolkata-based Global Automobiles announced on Friday that it too has plans, albeit for a car that costs even less than Rs 1,00,000.

"We are in talks with automobile manufacturers from Singapore and China to set up a sub Rs 1 lakh car manufacturing unit near Kolkata and are hoping to enter into a formal agreement with one of them very soon," Global Automobiles Chairman Santanu Ghosh said.

Global Automobiles, a part of computer hardware manufacturer Xenitis group, had earlier this week announced its plans to enter the two-wheeler market in India.

The company has entered into an agreement with state-run Chinese autombile manufacturer, Guangzhou Motors, to make motorcycles and gearless scooters for the Indian market.

"We have invested around Rs 280 crore (Rs 2.8 billion) to set up a two-wheeler manufacturing facility in Hooghly, West Bengal. The facility would have an intitial capacity to produce around three lakh two-wheelers per annum," Ghosh said.

He said the company has acquired around 20 acres in Hooghly for the two-wheeler project and is in talks with the state government to acquire an additional 50 acres for the proposed car project.

Tata Motors is in the process of acquiring 1,000 acres of land in Singur in West Bengal for its people's car project.

Global Motors would roll out a 125cc and 145cc motorbikes in January followed by a 100cc variant and gearless scooters.

"We would consolidate on the eastern region first before rolling out our products for the rest of the country... we would also be looking to exports," Global Automobiles General Manager Sumit Banerjee said.
