Sensex sheds 173 points to 13,799

The markets ended in deep red near the day's low on account of heavy selling seen frontline stocks. It was a broad based selling in scrips across sectors and the fall was in sync with some of its Asian peers.

This was the first weekly loss after six weeks of continuous gains. On a weekly basis the Sensex shaved off 0.5%.

The fall in the midcap was not as hard as in the frontliners.

The Sensex closed at 13,799.49 down 172.54 points and the Nifty closed at 3,962 down 53 points.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,730.42 down 37 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,745.54 down 34 points.

The BSE FMCG Index lost 1.4% at 2,020.63.  HLL, Nestle, United Spirits, Shaw Wallace, Colgate closed in red.

The BSE Metal Index was down 1.7% to close at 9,041.19. Welspun Guj, Sterlite Ind, Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, Hindalco, JSW Steel were among the losers.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.6% at 7,213.74. UTI Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Karnataka Bank, HDFC Bank, Oriental Bank moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index was plunged 0.5% at 3,724.95. Matrix Lab, Sterling Bio, Biocon, GlaxoSmithKline, FDC closed lower.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1.3% at 9,353.83.  Gammon India, Praj Industries, Bharat Elec, Greaves Cotton, BEML  ended lower

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,393.16 down 1.6%. Hind Motors, Escorts, Tata Motors, Punj Tractors, Bajaj Auto, Bharat Forge were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index closed at 5,130.24 down 0.6%. Moser Baer, Satyam,  TCS, Wipro, HCL Tech ended weak.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 6,095.46 down 2.2%. Reliance, ONGC, MRPL, IOC  slipped.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7548.15 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 29146.38 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4125.1 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 40819.63 crore.
