Six persons, most of whom have criminal past, have been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing a freelance television journalist from Uttar Pradesh in broad daylight here last week, police said on Wednesday.

Shahid, 22, Asif, 45, Shahzad Ali, 22, Afroz, 40, Abdul Wahab, 27, and Juber, 35, were arrested from different places in connection with the robbery-cum-murder. The freelance TV journalist was shot dead by unidentified assailants in north Delhi on Friday.

Police collected information regarding the passengers, who also travelled along with him on the day of incident, as Akram came to Delhi from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh in a bus.

After investigations, police zeroed-in on the suspects and arrested Asif and Afroz from Amroha. "They were interrogated at length. Initially, they concealed the facts but on sustained interrogation, both of them confessed their involvement along with five others and spilled the beans," Deputy Commissioner of police(North-east district) Sanjay Kumar Jain said.

During interrogation, it came to light that four of the accused also boarded the bus with the victim and Zubair overheard the deceased talking someone over mobile regarding money in lakhs.

"They thought that the deceased being the son of a famous family 'Latif masalewale' might have been carrying huge money in his bag. Asif Mullah immediately contacted his associate Asif and asked him to come along with Danish and Shahid to Jafrabad bus stand to rob the deceased," he said.

At the bus stand, Asif Mullah pointed out and made gestures towards the deceased to his three associates, who were already present there. "Danish snatched the bag and on resistance, both fired at the deceased and Asif Lambu's bullet hit him. They distributed the robbed articles among them," he said.

At the instance of Asif and Afroz, other accused were arrested and a country-made pistol along with all robbed articles like bag, mobile phone, gold ring, camera and watch of the deceased have also been recovered, Jain said.

Most of the accused have had criminal background, the police official said.
