Madhya Pradesh's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency and Bada Malhara assembly seat.

Uma Bharti's Bhartiya Jana Shakti failed to open account in its maiden electoral battle.

In the BJP's traditional stronghold of Vidisha, Public Health Engineering Minister Rampal Singh defeated his nearest Congress rival Rajshri Singh by over 85,000 votes to win the seat vacated by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Though state Bhartiya Jana Shakti president Raghunanda Singh was pushed to the third spot, his presence in the fray cost the BJP some votes as the Congress gained ground in the saffron bastion represented by Chouhan in the Lok Sabha for five times in a row.

In view of a split in traditional BJP votes, Rampal Singh polled around 2.58 lakh votes while the Congress candidate managed to occupy the second position by bagging 1.73 lakh votes. The BJS stood third with 1.37 lakh votes.

The by-election to Bada Malhara assembly seat, vacated by Bharti, proved to be tough for the BJP but its candidate Kapoorchand Ghuvara recorded a win over BJS candidate Rekha Yadav by over 4,300 votes.

Despite Bharti camping in the constituency and functioning as Rekha Yadav's poll agent, Ghuvara emerged winner.
