The man Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is shaking hands with is Maulana Fazlur Rahman, one of Pakistan's hardline Opposition leaders, and one of those who often gives General Pervez Musharraf sleepless nights.

This is the Maulana's second visit to India in less than four years.

The last time he was in New Delhi, India had another prime minister, and the Maulana's visit provoked speculation and some controversy.

Why did the Maulana visit India?

At Monday's event in New Delhi, Dr Singh inaugurated a Fida-e-Millat seminar organised by the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind.

An interview with the Maulana

"The use of religion for dividing people and getting electoral benefit is a bane of our age," the prime minister said. "It is a dangerous practice which needs to be curbed."

Beware the Maulana!

The Maulana was not the only Pakistani leader present. North West Frontier Province Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani also attended the seminar.
