The Himachal Pradesh government has recommended names of WWE star Dileep Singh Rana popularly known as 'the great Khali' and noted nephrologist Dr Devendra Singh Rana for Padma Shri awards.

Names of Khali and Dr Rana have been sent to the centre last week for consideration the awards, official sources said.

Their names have been recommended for the prestigious awards as they have brought laurels to the state through individual excellence in their respective fields, they added.

Khali, who hails from Dhiraina village of Sirmour district of the state, shot into fame with his performances in US' popular wrestling events -- World Wrestling Entertainment.

The one-time World Heavyweight Champion was honoured by the state government during his widely-publicised visit to the country in May this year.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had announced at that time that the state government would recommend Khali for the Padma Shri award.

The nomination of kidney expert Dr Rana, who comes from Hamirpur of the state, was made for his exemplary work in the field of nephrology, the sources said.

Rana is currently working with Sir Ganga Ram hospital in New Delhi.
