Curfew was relaxed for a few hours in Leh and Kargil Tuesday, which had witnessed widespread violence over reports of alleged desecration of Quran at a mosque, following an improvement in situation in the twin districts, officials said.

Curfew was relaxed forĀ four hours in entire Leh district from 9 am Tuesday morning, the sources said adding, if there was no untoward incident, the relaxation would be extended further.

Senior civil and police officials of the district are monitoring the situation, which has improved over the past few days, the sources said.

In Kargil, curfew was relaxed for three hours from 10.30 am in the whole district Tuesday, Senior Superintendent of Police Danish Rana told PTI.

No untoward incidents were reported during relaxation in the curfew in both the districts Monday.

Violence erupted in the Ladakh region early last week following allegations of desecration of the Quran in Bodh Kharboo area of Kargil district on February 6.

Buddhists and Muslims clashed at several places in both Leh and Kargil towns forcing the authorities to seek help of Army, Indo Tibetan Border Police and Central Reserve Police Force in maintaining law and order.
