An alert has been sounded by the Assam police after receiving intelligence inputs about the sinister design being hatched by a fundamentalist outfit to strike terror in the famous Shakti Shrine Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, a must visit site for any religious Hindu.
A police source informed that police and other security agencies have taken the threat very seriously and are trying to chalk out a strategy to augment security cover to the temple that is located at a vulnerable point atop a hillock overlooking the River Brahmaputra.
The management of Kamakhya Temple doesn't have a proper security establishment on its own unlike other famous shrines in the country and that has compounded the danger posed to the temple from fundamentalists.
The hilly area where the temple is located has witnessed a haphazard growth of population of late and the police arrested several militants from the area in the past.
A senior police official said it would be very difficult to scan every devotee coming to the temple and there is no system in Kamakhya temple to regulate flow of devotees on specific times of the day.
An officer-bearer in the Kamakhya Temple management committee informed that the temple banks on the district administration for security arrangement and it has only some volunteers to control the crowd movement in the temple premises.
The police haven't increase the presence of its personnel in and around the temple premises so far.
It may be mentioned that there is no permanent police outpost near the premises of the famous temple.
The city police claims that it has failed to set up one permanent outpost near the temple because of opposition from the temple management committee while office bearers of the temple decline to comment on it saying the matter is now sub-judice.
Meanwhile, Guwahati city police has chalked out an action plan to augment security cover to the temple in its surroundings and requested cooperation from the temple management committee in this regard.
A team of volunteers from the temple will be trained by the police to take care of part of the security arrangement inside the temple premises while metal detectors will be fitted at doors leading to the temple.
A senior police official said that any terror attack on this centuries-old famous Hindu temple would cause trouble all over the country given that it is revered by Hindus living all parts of the world.
