The Assam government has decided to recommend investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the abduction and subsequent death in crossfire of Food Corporation of India executive director (North-East) Dr P C Ram while in custody of the militants of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday informed the media in Guwahati that in response to the request made by Dr Ram's son and wife, the state government decided to give its nod for a CBI probe into the incident.
"My government has decided to opt for CBI investigation to make everything clear about the abduction and death of Dr Ram once and for all," Gogoi said.
The FCI executive director was abducted by banned ULFA militants from Guwahati on the evening of April 17 and was in the custody of the militant group till his death during a heavy exchange of fire between militants and Assam police team on the night of July 12 at Borka Paneetema village in Kamrup district.
Immediately after the death of Dr Ram in the 'crossfire', Assam Police Director General R N Mathur and state Chief Secretary P C Sharma claimed that the Assam police team engaged in encounter with the ULFA militants didn't have any information about the presence of the FCI official with that particular group of militants.
The family of Dr Ram latter requested Assam chief minister to go for a CBI enquiry into the abduction and killing of the FCI official because of the circumstances in which he was killed.
