Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has asked Prince Charles to follow tradition by staying apart from his fiancée Camilla Parker Bowles till their wedding, a tabloid reported on Wednesday.

Quoting royal sources, The Sun reported that the couple have argued in vain against the idea, saying everyone knows they live together, but the queen is adamant.

The queen has also stopped Prince Charles from throwing a lavish wedding reception. "She does not want to irritate the public with an ostentatious display," the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

The prince, who is 57 years old, had hoped to celebrate his marriage to the 57-year-old Parker Bowles by throwing a huge bash attended by "royal cronies, showbiz pals and friendly politicians".

But the queen has put her foot down, insisting on a formal, low-key reception.

The queen has also rejected Charles's wish to put all the arrangements in the hands of controversial ex-valet Michael Fawcett.

The prince has even been said he will not be able to serve dinner guests his beloved organic vegetables from Highgrove.

According to the report, Charles has told friends he is furious about his mother's intervention. He told one of them that Fawcett "knows how we like things".

The report said Charles wants to use the reception to "honour the woman who has stood by him for 34 years".

He wants to invite royal pals like King Carlos of Spain, ex-king Constantine of Greece, the Grimaldi family of Monaco, Prince Ernst of Hanover and pop stars like Elton John.
