Bipasha Basu in The LoversBipasha Basu’s Hollywood dreams have taken a bit of a beating, or so it would seem.

The actress's first international film Singularity, now titled The Lovers, has been relegated to a straight-to-DVD release, a move typically reserved for films Hollywood studios have lost all faith in.

Directed by renowned British filmmaker Roland Joffe (he had directed Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Patrick Swayze starrer City of Joy in Kolkata) , The Lovers had been four years in the making before it ran into production troubles.

What’s worse, even the reviews -- ranging from sarcastic to downright nasty -- have been less than favourable.

“Forget that The Lovers doesn’t have the courtesy to be fun; no cosmic romance should be so deeply afraid to shoot for the stars. As one of the film’s many forgettable characters so eloquently puts it, “This stinks worse than an oyster’s fart,” notes TimeOut critic David Ehrlich.

Another review in Los Angeles Times reads, “What is surprising is the fact that this nonsense, shot in 2012 under the title "Singularity," was written and directed by Roland Joffe, who, once upon a time, was responsible for the grittily realistic best-picture Oscar nominee known as "The Killing Fields.”

The film’s unceremonious release may have come as a huge blow to both Bipasha Basu and her The Lovers costar Abhay Deol considering both their Bollywood careers aren't exactly going great guns at the moment.
