Sensex ends down 23 points, Reliance gains 2%

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 182 points at 16,813, and rallied to a high of 16,967 in early deals. The index, however, could not hold gains and soon slipped into negative zone.

The Sensex dropped to a low of 16,565 towards the closing bell before settling with a loss of 23 points at 16,608.  The NSE Nifty ended 19 points lower at 4,838.

The BSE market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,712 stocks traded, 2,236 declined, 444 advanced and 32 were unchanged on Tuesday.

INDEX SHAKERS...

TCS plunged over 4% to Rs 865.

Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance Energy dropped 3% each to Rs 579 and Rs 1,536, respectively.

ACC and Reliance Communications slipped around 2.5% each to Rs 718 and Rs 576, respectively.

Tata Steel, NTPC and Bajaj Auto declined over 2% each to Rs 710, Rs 186 and Rs 2,071, respectively.

...AND THE MOVERS

ICICI Bank surged 2.7% to Rs 1,064. Reliance gained over 2% to Rs 2,324.

Ranbaxy and Bharti Airtel were the other gainers at Rs 369 and Rs 856, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance Power topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 821.70 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 433.30 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 403 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 264 crore) and Reliance (Rs 237.60 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 3.37 crore shares followed by Reliance Power (2.30 crore), debutant J Kumar Infrastructure (Rs 2.05 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 1.05 crore) and Ispat Industries (Rs 1.01 crore).
