The highest salary bagged by the outgoing batch of Vinod Gupta School of Management, the business school at IIT Kharagpur, was Rs 900,000 this year, Probir Gupta, Dean, VGSOM, told the press on Wednesday.

The highest salary drawn by the previous batch was Rs 800,000.

Compared to last year's average salary of Rs 600,000 per annum, this year's average has gone up to Rs 700,000, said Gupta.

All 85 students of the outgoing batch were placed within one-and-a-half days.

VGSOM opened its doors to foreign companies for recruitment this year.

This year, around 36 per cent students were recruited by the information technology (IT) and IT enabled services sectors, 27 per cent by the finance sector, 13 per cent each by manufacturing and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies and 11 per cent by consulting firms, said Gautam Sinha, professor-in-charge, training and placement at VGSOM.

Companies that visited VGSOM this year included ITC, Tata Motors, Haier, WIPRO, Infosys, HCL Technologies, TATA Technologies, IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Accenture, Citigroup, SBI, ICICI and HSBC, said Sinha.

Three foreign assignments were under way involving seven students at present.

Three companies had been set up by Btech students, informed Sinha.

VGSOM students said the school's six month dissertation programme with companies provided good exposure to industry, more than a two-month summer internship could provide. VGSON, an all-engineers business school, has batch strength of 120 students, out of which about 10 were IITans.

Students pursuing doctorate studies at VGSOM numbered 42, said K K Guin, associate dean, VGSOM.

VGSOM would soon be launching a combined Btech and MBA programme under one entrance test at the beginning of its BTech programme.
