India's largest oil producer Oil and Natural Gas Corp will launch its new logo on August 14, the ONGC Day.

The company is making changes in the main Vasudhara symbol, the name of its first oil well, to give it a corporate identity similar to the 'T' symbol of Tatas or the 'Shell' of the Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell Group.

"The idea is that the 'Vasudhara' symbol becomes synonymous with ONGC and its group company. The display of symbol alone should help recall ONGC Group like 'T' symbol is a statement that the company belongs to the Tata Sons," ONGC sources said.

Shell is represented with a shell symbol without any letters or words identifying the company. The aim of ONGC's new logo is also to achieve such symbolic identity.

The logo has been redesigned to make it more balanced. The colours of the new logo will be those representing the sun and the earth.

The name of the company's first oil well on Ankleshwar field was given by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. It depicts the image of a flowing well (Vasudhara means flow of wealth), which is vibrant, full of life and active all the time.

"In the existing logo the 'Vasudhara' symbol is blocked with a semi-circle on the top thus restricting the flow. In the new logo, this restriction has been removed so that the flow lines are open. Besides, the word ONGC, both in English and Hindi, will be displayed prominently and the state-run firm's message line 'Making Tomorrow Brighter' alongside."
