Law booksOnline travel agency MakeMyTrip has been ordered by a Delhi district consumer forum to pay Rs 72,000 to a customer for botching up her 2009 trip to Patna.

Holding the tour agency guilty of providing deficient service to its customer Sweta Singh, District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum president C K Chaturvedi asked it pay her Rs 15,000 as compensation besides refunding another sum of Rs 57,000 to her that she had spent due to botched up management of her trip by the agency.

"This is a case of deficiency (in service) and MakeMyTrip has acted imperfectly in the beginning and caused inconvenience, anxiety to the complainant and, therefore, she is entitled for this and the damages," the consumer forum said.

Delhi-resident Sweta Singh had lodged a complaint before the consumer forum, saying she had booked four tickets through MakeMyTrip from New Delhi to Patna by Jet Airways flight on December 26, 2009 and had made online payment to the tune of Rs 47,928.

She said the amount was deducted from her account and confirmation of these tickets was also sent to her but on the day of the journey, she was informed that her tickets were not booked.

She, therefore, had to book another ticket for the afternoon costing her another Rs 57,000.

When she took up the matter before MakeMyTrip, it accepted its mistake but refunded only Rs 22,464, following which she filed the complaint before the consumer forum.

During the pendency of the complaint, the travel agency made the remaining payment also.

The consumer forum, however, held that this refund of amount by the agency shows that it admits its guilt.
It said the woman was entitled to Rs 10,000 that she had to spend additionally for buying the alternate air tickets for going to Patna.

It also asked the agency to pay her another sum of Rs 15,000 to compensate her for inconvenience.
