Karnataka government has decided to approach the Centre for approval of its proposal for creating a Coastal Economic Zone, state's Minister for Large and Medium Industries R V Deshpande has said.

The service sector could come up in the zone, which would be apart from the Special Economic Zone proposed at Hassan, he said at a function in Bangalore last night to launch promotion of an international trade fair on infrastructure, engineering and technology.

Deshpande said the Centre had been requested not to hold up the Hassan Special Economic Zone for want of a legislation.

He said an Agro Food Policy would be unveiled within the next 15 days after obtaining the state Cabinet clearance.

An exhibition centre on the lines of "Pragati Maidan" in Delhi would come up on a 50 acre land at Whitefield on the city outskirts, he said.

Noting the delay in the Bangalore international airport project, he said things were "now moving in the right direction" and work on it was expected to commence in two or three months.

The international trade fair, with focus on engineering, infrastructure, technology, instrumentation and control and fasteners would be held in Bangalore in June 2004.

It would be organised in association with United Nations Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology, Greater Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Sandeep Bekal, convenor of the fair, said.
