HP, Compaq may sew up merger in 3-6 months

The merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq in India would take another three to six months to complete, said Balu Doraisamy, president, Hewlett-Packard India. Both the companies announced the merger in April 2001 globally.

"We have completed integration at the consumer facing areas such as channels and products. We have to complete the regulatory level integration process," Doraisamy said.

Besides, the company is also in the process of finalising the corporate structure of the company in the India and has just put in place the management structure of the company.

"We have put in place the top management team in the country with senior people in Delhi as well as Bangalore. We are building a another tier of management team in other major cities as well," he said.

Hewlett-Packard India, he said, had laid off about 8 per cent of its workforce as a part of the merger integration process and at present has about 700 people.

"Hewlett Packard had reorganised the workforce in India as a part of the integration and it is completed," Doraisamy said.

The Hewlett-Packard president also said the company has a production capacity of about 20,000 machines a month and has additional capacity to meet any requirement in the near future.

"The current capacity includes the combined production capacity of Hewlett Packard and Compaq in India," he said.

The company mainly makes mass products such as personal computers, mobile computers and some servers in India at present, while it continues to import high-end machines.

The merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq has seen the creation of the largest infotech company in the domestic market in terms of revenue as well as market share.

The merger has seen the computer major undertaking a major partner and marketing strategy realignment in the country.
