Agilent Technologies, the $7 billion US company focussed on measurement technologies, has announced its plan to set up a design centre in India to tap the domestic wireless market under its wireless systems solution division.

Said Amir Aghdaei, vice-president, wireless division, Agilent: "A score of global organisations are setting up their operations in India to tap this segment. Be it original equipment manufacturers or design firms, all are scaling up in India. We work with most of these original equipment manufacturers and as they set up base in India, it is imperative we support them from India. We are looking at a design centre in India, and based on the demand we will set up the required infrastructure for it."

The company, which was spun off from HP in 1999, provides technology components and tools that help customers design, build, operate, manage and maintain next generation communication devices, networks and services.

"Some services that fall under our umbrella include operations support systems and test solutions for the wireless and wireline service providers, communication equipment and component designers and manufactures," Aghdaei said.

He added that Agilent is planning to build a partner ecosystem to develop solutions for technical and business requirements. The Asia-Pacific region contributed 46 per cent of Agilent Technologies' annual revenue of $7.2 billion.

To give more focus to its APAC operations, the division has recently moved its headquarters to Singapore from Colorado in the US and is expecting 75 per cent of its business to be generated from the region in the near future.

Agilent, besides these new initiatives, has customer support centres in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad and also an ITeS centre in Delhi employing close to 1,000 people.
